Pakistan United Workers Federation (PUWF) Background and History:

This federation was formed on 28 September 2024 as a result of merger of ten leading national and Provincial level federations. One constituent federation of this newly merged federation namely Pakistan Workers Federation was also formed as a result of merger in 2006 by merging, All Pakistan Federation of Labour (APFOL) formed in 1948, All Pakistan Federation of Trade Unions (APFTU) formed in sixties and Pakistan National Federation of Trade Unions (PNFTU). Therefore, in terms of period spent in servicing workers, PUWF is the oldest federation of the country. It is an independent and non-political organization. The affiliated unions of this federation represent workers from various sectors of the economy including water and power, telecommunication, irrigation, textile, garments, leather, transport, gas, engineering, local bodies, banking, insurance, media, newspaper hawkers, mines, minerals, Development Authorities, works departments, sports & surgical goods, fertilizer, automobile, sugar, cement, chemicals, pharmaceutical, hotels, and metals etc. The total staff and volunteers looking after day-to–day affairs of the federation at its head office and the eight regional branches counts 78 people. It has a representative character in all the four provinces of Pakistan. At the international level, this federation is affiliated with International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). The current leadership comprises of Ch Saad Muhammad, General Secretary who is the youngest labour leader in such responsible position in the trade union movement history and the current president Mukhtar Hussain Awan had a long experience of working in trade union of about 40 years. Waqar Ahmed Memon who is the chairman of the federation currently is also leader of the textile sector workers unions in Karachi and also a labour law experts providing volunteer service to more than 200 unions in Sindh.
